Small claims court is a civil court where you can sue someone for $10,000 or less. It has simplified rules and can go much faster than other types of cases.
A plaintiff in small claims court can sue a defendant for a number of things, including:
- Unpaid rent
- Medical bills resulting from a car accident
- Not satisfying a contract
A plaintiff cannot bring a case in small claims court to:
- Get a service that is owed to them;
- Stop an action against them; or
- Get their property back
